An innovative first for squash in New Zealand has been confirmed with the hosting of an international squash event inside a shopping centre.
Mt Maunganui Sports Club today confirmed the August event called the “Mt Maunganui Festival of Squash”. The event has been made possible through sponsorship and support from the BayFair Shopping Centre, Delta Corporation and Squash New Zealand.
Running in conjunction with the international event the week long squash festival will also include a local Mt Maunganui Open event which will be open to the general squash public.
“To be able to confirm an event of this nature is a coup for the Mt Maunganui Sports club and for Bay of Plenty sport in general” said Mt Maunganui Squash Club President Mike Flood-smith.
The festival will include a Men’s and Women’s division featuring internationally ranked players from the worlds top echelon competing along side New Zealand’s finest including New Zealand’s top ranked, and current world number 7 Shelley Kitchen.
In a move away from the traditional squash club, Bayfair Shopping Centre will be the venue for this innovative sporting event. The all glass court will be erected in the shopping centre creating a stunning visual setting for this dynamic squash event, the first time ever in New Zealand that a squash series has been held in this environment.
Friday August 8 to Sunday August 10th Bayfair Shopping Centre, outside Kmart.
