Sustainability Update

Becoming New Zealand’s first shopping centre with a 4Star Green Building Performance rating doesn’t happen by chance. We’ve been on a journey of bettering our environmental impact for the past 20 years, making sustainability part of our DNA as a business. To truly reduce our impact takes a team effort, with all stores and management taking an active role in reducing our water usage, energy usage and waste creation. Here’s how that’s been going…

💧 First up, our most precious resource - water.

In 2023 we captured and reused 3.3 million litres of water, collecting rainwater from the roof and grey water from handbasins. The water is treated before being reused to flush the loos. That’s enough water to flush an average toilet over 700,000 times!

💡 Electricity usage is looking bright.

We have been on the glo to reduce energy consumption. In 2014 we retrofitted the whole centre with LED lighting, sensor light controls and systems to monitor the air conditioning use. That was just the start of our focus on our electricity use. Through continually looking at ways to cut down, we’ve reduced the centre’s electricity use by 9.2% between 2021 and 2023, despite the centre growing in size during that time. That’s the same as if 30 houses didn’t use any power for a whole year!

♻️ Laying waste to waste.

One of the biggest changes in making our waste management more sustainable was in the food court. We changed to a new operational model where our cleaning team collect 100% of customers' waste from the tables, so they can be separated into recyclables and landfill. The addition of a soft plastic recycling bins has helped too. This focus has lead to a waste reduction of 7.5% between 2021 and 2023 - that’s 28 tonnes less landfill waste! Our annual waste diversion rate is currently over 54%, with over 5.5 million tonnes of waste (and counting) diverted from landfill in the last 10 years.

Like anything, making good choices for our environment is a never-ending journey. But it’s one we’re happy to be on with you.
